Fourth Sunday of Advent 2015

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone

Do you remember this Hal David and Burt Bacharach tune? You probably do and one of the many recordings of it is spinning in your mind now. These lyrics were so true in the mid-1960’s when it was released, just as they are now. They were even true at the time of Jesus birth. Our world needs love, the love of mankind for each other and the love of God in each person’s heart. This fact is evident in the daily news, isn’t it?

The fourth Sunday of Advent’s theme is love. What the world needed was love. God’s love sent Jesus to be born of a woman, live on the earth like any other human, die on a cross for sins he did not commit and then be gloriously resurrected. All this so we could be forgiven and have eternal life with a loving Father. Love so powerful we cannot understand, but so easy to receive if we only believe.

Love came down at Christmas,                                                                                          Love all lovely, Love Divine,                                                                                                 Love was born at Christmas,                                                                                                Star and Angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,                                                                                                     Love Incarnate, Love Divine,                                                                                         Worship we our Jesus,                                                                                                                    But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,                                                                                                         Love be yours and love be mine,                                                                                        Love to God and all men,                                                                                                        Love for plea and gift and sign.

(by Christina Rossetti, Time Flies: A Reading Diary, 1885)

In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. I John 4:10 NRSV
